How Do I?

Find a book

Connect to the OSU Library Catalog. Search by title, author, subject or keyword. Typically, radiation medicine and oncology books are in the Prior Health Sciences Library. Take note of the call number and location within the library.

Books from any of the OSU libraries can be delivered to your office or held for pick-up at the Health Sciences Library. Once you have identified a book:

  • Click on the red REQUEST this item button at the top of the page
  • Enter your name and social security number or University ID number
  • Select My Office or Health Sciences Library as the Pick-up Location
  • Click SUBMIT

Get a book not available at OSU

When a book is not available at OSU or it is checked out to someone else, click on the blue-banded button labeled "OhioLINK Catalog" at the top, right side of the page. This links to the OhioLINK Central Catalog (the joint catalog of 80 Ohio colleges and universities and the State Library of Ohio).

After connecting to OhioLINK, check for availability of the book by clicking on the blue phrase at the top of the page "x OhioLINK libraries have this item." If a copy is available, click on the blue phrase at the top of the page "REQUEST THIS ITEM." Then select your institution's name from the drop-down menu and click submit. On the next page, enter your name, identification number and preferred pickup location. The book will be at your preferred pickup location within 3-5 days.

If the book is not available in either the OSU or OhioLINK catalogs, contact the librarian.

Find a journal

Journals are available in print and online formats; many titles are available in both. Use the journal catalog in the Library Catalog. After you type in the journal title, look for it in the result list. If there is an online version, the title will be followed by "online" or "computer file." If there is only a print version, click on the title for the holdings list and availability. For all online journals, connect to E-journals A-Z.

In the Health Sciences Library, bound journals are shelved in alphabetical order on the second and third floors.

Get an article from a journal not available at OSU

Contact the Myers librarian at sprague.3@osu.edu. Please provide as complete a citation as possible.

Conduct a literature search

Use one of the many bibliographic databases available from University Libraries. Those most commonly used in radiation medicine are on the home page of the Health Sciences Library. Click on MEDLINE to search the premier biomedical literature database. Click on MORE DATABASES for access to all health-related databases including CINAHL, Science Citation Index, BIOSIS, etc.

Short workshops on how to use the most popular online information resources are regularly scheduled in the Health Science Library. Online tutorials and instructional guides are also available.

Access library resources from off-campus

The library's catalog is available to anyone with a Web browser. However, access to online journals and bibliographic databases is restricted to those holding a valid OSU username and password. If you are unsure of your username/password contact the Office of Information Technology at 688-HELP.

To connect from off-campus, navigate to the Prior Health Sciences Library Web site at http://library.med.ohio-state.edu/. Click "Sign in" and then enter your username/password when prompted.
